A NEW INVESTIGATION AGAINST FERHAT TUNÇ

A NEW INVESTIGATION AGAINST FERHAT TUNÇ

ISTANBUL – Musician Ferhat Tunç made a formal deposition at the Office of Büyükçekmece Public Prosecution Office due to an investigation filed by Eruh Public Prosecution Office against him about a speech he made at Eruh (Ciraf) 1st. Cultural Festival on the skirts of Eruh (Ciraf) Mountain on 15 August 2009.

Prosecutor claimed that Ferhat Tunç “made propaganda for PKK/KONGRA-GEL” in his public address and wanted him to be tried under the Law No.3713 article 7/2, carrying a prison term of 3 years.

Ferhat Tunç was summoned to Istanbul Büyükçekmece Prosecution Office on the demand of Eruh Prosecution Office. Tunç was made to watch the video shootings of his concert and his speech and a statement was taken from him.

Ferhat Tunç said that he was behind his words and noted that the associating his comments with an organisation and the accusations against him was unfortunate.

Tunç had said at Eruh festival: “I have been a musician of you for 25 years and I have witnessed the developments in this region. I have witnessed murders, massacres and killings by unknown perpetrators in this region caused by murderers in uniform who are on trial today in connection with Ergenekon organisation. I have witnessed how those murderers in uniform turned this heavenly geography into a hell. Yes, I have been a witness as well as an artist. You are opening a new window to peace and fraternity in Eruh after 25 years. The march for freedom you initiated has evolved to peace and I welcome this by heart as much as you do. …A kind of Turkey where our people can live on equal terms and with their language, culture and beliefs is a common longing for us all. I hope that the call for peace and fraternity made here in Eruh where the first bullet had been fired, reaches to the whole of Turkey, I hope this peace cry reaches to Turks, Arabs, Armenians and other peoples who live in other parts of Turkey. For there is no way forward except peace, I greet you all with these feelings.”

Ferhat Tunç has been awarded with “World Free Music Award” by Freemuse this year. Musician Pete Seeger who was a leading figure in civil rights movement in US in 1960s received the award last year. Ferhat Tunç and Iranian musician Mahsa Vahdat shared this year’s award. Tunç and Vahdat received their award at a ceremony in London’s British Royal Architecture Institute on March the 25th.
